About

I run product and insights teams through uncertainty, to where the decisions get made. I find myself close to or in leadership teams wherever I go.

The first fifteen years I spent outside the companies I worked for. At design consultancies in SE, UK and the US, I led design research and product strategy on other people's products, ending as VP Design and Director of Design Methods at Veryday, McKinsey Design. Those years taught me how to arrive somewhere unfamiliar, understand it quickly, and leave something useful behind. What I longed for was what happened after the recommendation.

In 2018 I went in-house. My goal was to get close to the room where the decisions were being made. There I championed a people-centered approach to product development that balanced organisational fit with the need to be bold. Since 2024, I've been focused on product leadership and the challenges that come leading through both strategic and operational decisions.

Seasonally, and on my own time, I build BalconySense. It is a product for people working out what to do with their balcony. I write it myself, in Claude Code, and I build it based on people-centered design, the way I would build anything else.

What I've learned along the way is how easy it is to fall for our own favourite ideas and ambitions. AI hasn't changed that. It has just made us faster at it.

Deciding what to build is still the interesting problem, and the one I'd like to talk to you about.
